Would a ketogenic diet be appropriate for my 12-year-old daughter with type 2 diabetes?

Q: Would a ketogenic diet be appropriate for my 12-year-old daughter with type 2 diabetes?

A ketogenic diet is very high in fat and low in carbohydrates, typically providing less than 25 grams of net carbs per day. Although your daughter's blood sugar control would benefit from this dietary approach, she may find it easier to consume about twice as many carbs with a slightly more liberal diet that allows berries, Greek yogurt, and other foods that are minimized on a ketogenic diet. Avoiding all forms of sugar (including honey) and refined grains are the most important thing to keep in mind, but keep portions of all carb-containing foods small. Getting adequate protein is also crucial for promoting proper growth throughout adolescence, as well as helping to control appetite and prevent overeating.
