What hormone causes the blood sugar to rise while sleeping?

There are actually several hormones that are responsible for a rise in early morning blood sugar levels. Growth hormone, cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine all play a role. These hormones are released overnight in order to provide you with the energy you need to get up and moving in the morning. When people do not have diabetes, their body responds with an increase in insulin production as well. However, when your body can't provide the insulin needed to use up this extra glucose or your cells are resistant to the insulin your body produces, you end up with higher than desired blood sugar values.
