It's in your best interest from a diabetes and weight management standpoint to avoid sweets altogether. Choose low-carb appetizers, and make sure to eat enough meat, poultry or fish along with vegetables at your meal. If you enjoy social drinking and haven't been told to avoid alcohol by your doctor for another medical condition, have 1-2 glasses of dry wine or champagne, or 1-2 ounces of hard liquor mixed with club soda or diet soda instead of dessert.
