Q: How does stress raise your blood sugar? I don't understand it if you're not eating anything sweet.
Stress can indeed raise blood sugar levels when you haven't eaten.
When you're under stress your body responds by releasing certain hormones, mainly cortisol and epinephrine. These hormones trigger your liver to release stored sugar to provide energy that allows you to move away from the stress or confront it head on. Although the stress may be emotional rather than a physical threat, your body is unable to distinguish between the two, so sugar is released in either case.
Learning to manage stress levels by engaging in yoga, tai chi, meditation or other mind-body practices can help you keep your blood sugar under better control.
