As the holidays approach so to do the fears of having high blood sugars. It never fails, I dream of making it through Thanksgiving and Christmas without hyperglycemia. But as I sit down and see all the beautiful voluptuous foods, I can't help but to chow down on everything!

I go through the meats, breads, veggies, casseroles, and then come the desserts. And after all that I usually go through for a second swipe at all my favorites from the first trip.

This is why I sometimes take my shot after meals, especially on the holidays. This way I can sit back and think about everything that I have had and start doing the math in my head. This can lead to overeating though, because I think to myself, "well, I might as well just keep eating and just take more insulin."

Lately I have been trying to get better about calculating insulin dosage before the meal. One definitely has to be more disciplined if taking your shots this way. This leads me to another point. I love food labels with nutrition facts on them.

Sometimes eating pre-labeled meals means sacrificing better tasting foods. I would almost always just prefer to have a labeled can of soup, a certain amount of crackers, and a carefully measured glass of milk. It is SO much less of a hassle than trying to guess how many carbs I have eaten and then paying for it later with a high or a low!

Food labels are awesome and they make our jobs a whole lot easier.

It is very nice; as some of you have commented on previous posts, that fast food joints these days are making labels more readily available. But like I said, sometimes you just want to grab something quick and not have to put that much thought into it. You have to decide which way you want to go. Risk having irregular sugars with better tasting food or eat something you picked up from the grocery store. The holidays and the infinite food choices we face are a perfect example of this.

Although I look SO FORWARD to being with family and eating until my belt pops, I also look forward to making a very educated guess about how much insulin I will need and then sticking to my game plan!

Have a great holiday meal and choose your food and dosage wisely!
