Caregivers need time for themselves too. Parents of children with diabetes should arrange for back-up or respite care for their child at least once a month to recharge their batteries, re-establish couple connections, and maintain their emotional balance.
Other ways to stay sane:
Stay supported. Seek out support from others in your area who understand. Your child’s endocrinologist may have information on local support groups, or try your community hospital.
Don’t do it all. If childcare has become time-intensive due to diabetes, get help with some of the non-essential tasks in life, such as cleaning the house and doing the yardwork.
Get involved. Helping out with fundraising efforts with your local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation can give you an outlet to strike back at diabetes.
